Katherina Hristova
Hi, I'm Kate, a film composer based in LA, but I call many places my home: My parents are Bulgarian, I was born in Germany, and raised in The Netherlands and Germany. And I went to university in the UK!
I´m excited about lush, epic, orchestral but also cutesy music that communicates through emotive melodies. My own work naturally contains traits inspired by it, but I also love to play with the use of synths and more contemporary techniques and instrumentation, and am always curious to discover new fields and develop my artistry.
My passion for music comes from my great-grandfather who played violin in silent movies in Bulgaria during the 1930/40s. Even though I started as an instrumentalist (flute and piano) as well, my focus shifted to composition and I graduated from the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire (Birmingham, UK) with a major in composition in 2024, specialising in film music.
Film projects I've worked on during my studies include animation (The Stars Between Us), comedies (Manton's Mice), podcasts (still in production so can't reveal the name!), documentaries (This is my Sketchbook, Episode 4), thrillers (Flowers) and horror/mysteries (Paranormal Phenomenon - The Investigatora). Latter won 'Best Sound Design'.
I also enjoyed the collaboration and experimenting with new approaches and techniques in the concert piece 'The Song of the Sea', performed by the string chamber orchestra 'The Midland Sinfonia' and with the CBSO (City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra), who performed my arrangement of Geralt of Rivia from the Netflix series 'The Witcher'.
In addition, I had the wonderful opportunity to assist Alex Heffes (composer) and Neil Stemp (music editor/composer) during the recording sessions of the feature film Mafia Mamma in the UK.
I'm excited to delve into further collaborations to tell what you can't see through my music ! Don't hesitate to message me if you have any questions or queries :)
P.S. If you want to hear some music from the podcast, please message me as I can't publish it publicly yet (as it's still in production). Some of the music I composed for it is a theme, ambient, tense, background, funeral and sad/melancholic music.
