Derek Baird

I am tremendously excited to be a part of the SMPTV program this year.
Like most of the composers here, I began playing and writing music from an early age. I studied composition at the conservatory of North Carolina School of the Arts, writing for orchestra and chamber ensembles, while playing in indie bands on the weekends.
Moving to New York City after graduation, I was hired as assistant to Douglas Cuomo (Sex & The City, Homicide: Life in the Street). While working for Douglas and part time as an IT guy and tech consultant for other New York composers, I took composition classes at Juilliard, studying with Conrad Cummings. This reignited my love of composition and I found myself anxious to pursue my love of writing music for film.
I have written music for PBS's "Wide Angle" and the Emmy-winning "Expose: America's Investigative Reports" and have done music editing for several other documentaries. I have also on occasion shifted from the screen to the stage, most recently composing music and underscore for "Catherine Wheel", a new Craig Lucas play, which had its off-Broadway workshop premiere this past July.
While I have a particular interest in thought-provoking films and documentaries, I am excited to write for any genre and am eager to learn new styles.
