Orchestral Scoring: The first semester of this course begins with demonstrations of each of the primary orchestral instruments within the strings, brass, and woodwind sections, offering special attention to the specific use of timbre, tessitura, range and performance in dramatic/emotional situations. These are combined with practical compositional exercises that focus on the dramatic possibilities of instruments in various combinations. Following the completion of these demonstrations and exercises for each orchestral section, the students compose a quintet-sized cue that is recorded at a subsequent acoustic session. The second-semester class begins with the Georges Delerue Session, which brings the orchestral sections together into a larger ensemble, and concludes with the scoring program's capstone 65-piece scoring session.
