Orchestral Scoring: The first semester of this course begins with demonstrations of each of the primary orchestral instruments within the strings, brass, and woodwind sections, offering special attention to the specific use of timbre, tessitura, range and performance in dramatic/emotional situations. These are combined with practical compositional exercises that focus on the dramatic possibilities of instruments in various combinations. Following the completion of these demonstrations and exercises for each orchestral section, the students compose a quintet-sized cue that is recorded at a subsequent acoustic session. The second-semester course begins in January with the Georges Delerue Session, which brings the orchestral sections together into an ensemble of 28 players. In early May, the course concludes with our capstone 65-piece scoring session on the Warner Bros.' Eastwood Scoring Stage.
