Sturdivant Adams

emailweb site

I've played and studied music my whole life. Some of the most rewarding creative experiences I've had have come from working with others - orchestras, filmmakers, and contemporary music ensembles - to create music that reaches a deep expression of the collective intent. Understanding and then unmasking to illuminate the real intent of a scene or a concept is one of the most rewarding aspects of this work. I'm excited by creating music that breathes - incorporating the human element of live musicians with modern and vintage technology. I'm strongly drawn towards projects which, when fully realized, embody a unique expressive world envisioned by the filmmakers.

Sturdivant Adams' music has been performed internationally throughout Europe and the United States. The winner of the 2018 U.K. national Young Composers’ Competition sponsored by the Royal Northern Sinfonia, his music has been premiered or recorded by The Amadeus Chamber Orchestra of the Polish Radio, the Oxford Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra for the Earth, the Royal Northern Sinfonia, and members of the LA Philharmonic Orchestra.

Born in San Francisco in 1993, Sturdivant developed an early interest in music when he started studying piano at a young age, continuing his study of both classical (San Francisco Music Conservatory) and jazz piano (California Jazz Conservatory) over the next 20 years.

Sturdivant holds an MPhil in Music Composition with Distinction from the University of Oxford (Worcester College), where he studied with composer Robert Saxton, and a BA magna cum laude from Columbia University. While at Oxford, he was also mentored by Tony Award-Winning composer Claude-Michel Schönberg (Les Misérables).

In 2017, Sturdivant’s Symphony 2 was commissioned by the award-winning POLIN Museum (European Museum of the Year Award 2016), the piece receiving its premiere February 2019 at the POLIN Music Festival in Warsaw, Poland.

From 2010-2016 Sturdivant founded and ran a music arranging and transcription business, working for over a half dozen GRAMMY award-winning and nominated artists from including Terri Lyne Carrington, Eric Harland, Taylor Eigsti, Julian Lage, Walter Smith III and Ambrose Akinmusire.

Sturdivant is currently pursuing a Master’s in Screen Scoring at USC Thornton in Los Angeles, where he studies with Hollywood composers Bruce Broughton (Rescuers Down Under, Lost in Space, Silverado), Christopher Young (Hellraiser, Spider-Man 3, The Grudge), Eric Schmidt (Tom & Jerry and the Magic Ring), and Garry Schyman (Bioshock series, Dante’s Inferno, Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor).
